Stormwater Infrastructure Improvements

In addition to the Bee Branch Healthy Homes Resiliency Program, $23.1 million of the disaster resiliency funds awarded to the City will be used to complete stormwater infrastructure improvements in the Bee Branch Watershed.

Bee Branch Creek Railroad Culverts

The City received $9 million to install six 8-foot diameter culverts utilizing tunneling methods from the Lower Bee Branch Creek, approximately 165 feet through the Canadian Pacific railroad right-of-way, to a proposed junction box. It also includes the construction of five 12-foot wide by 10-foot high box storm sewers from the proposed junction box two hundred feet north toward Garfield Avenue and the Upper Bee Branch Creek. The total cost for this component of the Bee Branch Project is estimated at $18 million, with the remaining funds already in the City budget.

22nd Street / Kaufmann Avenue Storm Sewer

The City received $11.5 million to increase the capacity of the stormwater management system from Central Avenue to Kane Street. The improvements consists of a 10-foot by 6-foot reinforced concrete box storm sewer from Elm Street along 22nd Street to the west and continuing under Kaufmann Avenue to Kane Street. Improvements also include large high-capacity inlets placed in the terrace along Kaufmann Avenue to capture overland drainage. In addition, 80 standard single-grate inlets will be installed and connected to the new box culvert. The project includes the reconstruction of the street and the relocation of underground utilities along the entire length of the project within the street right-of-way.

17th Street / West Locust Street Storm Sewer

The City received $2.6 million for improvements to the West Locust St. storm sewer. It includes the installation of a 96-inch diameter pipe from the Lower Bee Branch Creek west through the railroad tracks owned and operated by the Canadian Pacific Railroad. A 10-foot by 5-foot box storm sewer is proposed from just west of the railroad tracks to West Locust Street approximately 280 feet west of Angella Street. In addition, a 10-foot by 4-foot box storm sewer is proposed from 280 feet west of Angella Street to 400 feet west of Kirkwood Street, and a 8-foot by 4-foot box storm sewer is proposed from 400 feet west of Kirkwood Street to Rosedale Avenue. Improvements also include several high-capacity inlets and approximately 100 standard capacity inlets along the project corridor. Finally, the project includes the reconstruction of the street and the relocation of underground utilities along the entire length of the project within the street right-of-way.
