The Dubuque Historic Millwork District
The Historic Millwork District is saturated with history. It imbues the area with authenticity and character while offering valuable lessons about the importance of sustainable urban design strategies. At the turn of the century, the District was the innovative and entrepreneurial center of the region and was the backbone of the regional economy. Dozens of companies, 2,500 employees, a district heating system, and intimate connections to Downtown and the Washington Neighborhood characterized the District. This District will resurrect the forgotten strategy that connects people, planet, and profit in a mixed-use neighborhood. It offers a vision for a community reconnected with surrounding neighborhoods, reenergized with housing, retail, offices, galleries, entertainment, and employment, and re-imagined as a laboratory for sustainable practices and technologies.

The revitalization of this unique area of town will be done to achieve several goals:
- Preserve the millwork history of Dubuque
- Create an urban, mixed-use neighborhood
- Become a model for redevelopment by incorporating sustainable practices
- Attract and retain a quality workforce for Dubuque’s growing economy
Many great things are happening in Dubuque, and this revitalization will prepare the community for greater things to come.
Iowa Great Places is a State of Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs initiative that combines state resources with local assets to help Iowans make their communities, regions, districts or neighorhoods great places to live, work and raise a family. Dubuque was named an Iowa Great Place in 2006 and the Historic Millwork District Streetscape Project was awarded a $150,000 Iowa Great Place grant in 2009.
