What do a mouse, a ducky and a tired tower have in common? They are all part of the City of Dubuque's 2009-2010 Art on the River public temporary art exhibit located along the RiverWalk in the Port of Dubuque. Stroll the picturesque walkway near the Mississippi and view eleven pieces of public art that will have you and your family talking, smiling and taking pictures. In its fourth year, the  public art exhibit drew 68 entries from 36 artists in 11 different states. The exhibit will be on display through June 2010. The exhibit is free, can be viewed sunrise to sunset year-round, and is accessible.

Art on the River Overview
Art on the River is a temporary public art program of outdoor sculpture displayed at the Port of Dubuque along the picturesque Mississippi RiverWalk.

Each summer, ten pieces are chosen by
a jury of experts from a highly competitive field of local and national artists to be displayed for a year. Selected artists receive a $1,500 stipend for displaying their artwork for a year.

During the course of the year, special events are held to promote the enjoyment and understanding of public art. Each piece is for sale but must remain part of the Art on the River display for the entire year. The City functions as a gallery and will take a commission on each sale to fund future exhibitions. The City Council approved the creation of the Art on the River outdoor sculpture project In November 2005, and approved a budget of $300,000 over the next 10 years for this innovative initiative.

Art on the River is coordinated by a sub-committee of the City's Arts and Cultural Affairs Advisory Commission and includes representatives from the Dubuque Museum of Art, local artists, educators, and City staff. For more information, please contact the Arts and Cultural Affairs Coordinator by calling 563.690.6064 or 563.589.4110.
