Paint Disposal
Latex paint can be dried by stirring cat litter, dirt or sand into the can to dry it out. You can also pour it onto a piece of cardboard and let it dry. Once the can is completely dry, leave the lid off and place it in your refuse container or bag.

Oil-based paint can be taken to the Regional Collection Center (RCC) located at the DMASWA Landfill. First call to schedule an apointment at 563.589.1720.

Glass Disposal
Dubuque residents have four options for glass food and beverage container disposal:

redeem your Iowa five-cent beverage containers at local retailers; take glass containers to Dittmer Recycling at 1755 Radford Rd. for recycling; take glass containers to the Dubuque Metropolitan Area Solid Waste Agency (DMASWA) Landfill at 14501 Highway 20 West; or place glass in your residential refuse container. Glass is an inert, non-toxic material and can be landfilled without harm to the environment.

The Dubuque City Council voted to drop glass from the City’s curbside recycling program in April 2011 after a policy change by the Dubuque Metropolitan Area Solid Waste Agency (DMASWA). This policy change resulted from a DMASWA-commissioned report that found that curbside glass collection for recycling in the DMASWA planning area was unsustainable.

Electronics Recycling
Also, as of July 1, 2011, Dubuque’s solid waste collection customers are no longer allowed to dispose of electronic items in their trash. All unwanted electronics must be recycled through the DMASWA's electronics recycling program or through programs offered by area electronics retailers.

Best Buy and Staples have recycling programs for electronics.

Electronics are defined as anything with a circuit board and/or cathode ray tube (CRT or “picture tube.”) Examples include: computer monitors and CPUs, cell phones, televisions, printers, DVD players, and VCRs.

The DMASWA program's recycling fees are:

$ 5.00 each Monitors, small televisions, laptop computers (under 27”)

$10.00 each
Larger televisions and monitors (over 27”)

$15.00 each
Console televisions

*No Charge All other electronics and accessories

Other retailers and service companies recycle electronics and can be found in the yellow pages or online under "Recycling and Reuse Guide" at www.DMASWA.org.

For more information, contact DMASWA Administrator Chuck Goddard at 589-4250 or visit www.dmaswa.org.
