U.S. 52/Central Ave. Resurfacing Project

The U.S. 52/Central Ave. Resurfacing and Sidewalk Curb Ramp Project is a partnership between the City and the Iowa Department of Transportation. It involves the installation of 28 new ADA-compliant sidewalk curb ramps and street pavement resurfacing on Central Ave. from 9th St. to 21st St. Work on the sidewalk curb ramps began in August 2019 and continued throughout the 2019 construction season. Work is expected to resume in early- to mid-April 2020. The final completion date specified for the project is July 3, 2020.

2020 Construction Schedule

Sidewalk Curb Ramp Reconstruction

In April 2020, the contractor will begin sidewalk curb ramp reconstruction and associated underground utility work on the east side of Central Ave. The following intersections will be impacted:

  • 20th Street
  • 19th Street
  • 16th Street
  • 15th Street
  • 14th Street
  • 13th Street
  • 11th Street
  • 9th Street

The contractor will work on a maximum of two intersections at a time during which the east lane of Central Ave. will be closed. Construction will start at the 20th St. and 19th St. intersections and then continue south from 16th St. to 9th St. The sidewalk curb ramp and utility work are expected to take at total of approximately six to eight weeks. Please note, the construction schedule is tentative and may change due to weather or the contractor’s schedule.

Milling & Resurfacing

After all the sidewalk curb ramp and utility work is completed, the contractor will begin the milling and resurfacing of Central Ave. from 9th St. to 21st St. During this time, Central Ave. will be reduced to one lane with parking removed on one side. The lane closures will be the entire length of the project from 9th St. to 21st St. Resurfacing is expected to take approximately four to five weeks. The process is as follows:

  • East lane and parking closed to mill and pave a base course. Lane opened when finished.
  • West lane and parking closed to mill and pave a base course. Lane opened when finished.
  • East lane and parking closed for final paving. Lane Opened when finished.
  • West lane and parking closed for final paving. When finished, the project is complete.
