2021 Summer Activities

Several youth and adult programs are planned for summer 2021 including swimming lessons, tennis, baseball, softball, adventure day camp, the playground explorations program, and more. See our activities brochure for full details! 

Youth Camps

Four Mounds Adventure Day Camp

This week-long adventure takes place in four great locations throughout Dubuque!

Fun-filled activities include the Four Mounds Challenge Ropes Course, canoeing on Catfish Creek at Mines of Spain, ecosystem adventures at Swiss Valley Nature Center and the EB Lyons Interpretive Center. Campers will also enjoy swimming, creek-stomping, hiking, team-building exercises, arts and crafts, and games.

Camp Details

Camp runs Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. with an option of before- and after-care, extending hours from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Children are required to bring a sack lunch. All other supplies and safety equipment are provided by the camp, including life vests. Convenient pick-up and drop-off locations will be announced. For all activities, we provide at least one highly-trained staffer for every five campers. Campers need no special skills and participate at their own comfort level. Cost is $145 per camper each week or free to income-qualifying families that are residents of Dubuque. Children may register for one week only.

How To Register

Income-qualifying resident families can register immediately by calling 563.589.4263. Non-income qualifying families can email their name, contact information, and the activity number to parkrec@cityofdubuque.org to be placed on a waiting list.  Those waitlisted will be contacted when/if an opening becomes available. Online registration is not available for these classes.

Four Mounds Adventure Day Camp is made possible with federal Community Development Block Grant funding and provided in partnership with the Found Mounds Foundation, the Dubuque County Extension and the City of Dubuque Leisure Services Department.

Join Challenge to Change for two days of superhero-themed fun! Our YogArt for Minis Camp combines the creative, calming practices of yoga and art into one amazing event. Children will breathe, stretch, and imagine as they receive instruction in yoga and mindful art. We will learn that we are all superheroes who have the power to change the world! Note, child must be potty-trained and able to attend without a caregiver present.

Dubuque Tactical Weapons Academy takes the best and most effective skills and drills from various martial arts styles, and combines them into one eclectic system of training. The curriculum blends traditional martial art teaching concepts with a modern-day tactical approach. It is taught in a safe and controlled environment by qualified expert instructors and focuses on both open hand self-defense applications, as well as traditional and modern weapons defense strategies. Master Ron Schmitt offers over 35 years of martial arts experience and has created a unique Tactical Martial Arts Academy that is Tactical, Practical, Effective, and Efficient. This session will focus on Filipino Stick Fighting, Open Hand Drills, Tactical Knife Defenses, and Gun Defenses & Disarming Techniques.

The benefits of a martial arts training program for children have been proven to contribute tremendously to a young child’s positive character and many other areas of their lives. Grandmaster Schmitt’s School of Martial Arts builds strong bodies and strong values.  Karate is beneficial both physically and mentally as it is geared towards skill and comprehension levels.

The curriculum focuses on technical skills, offense/defense strategies, stage performance, competition training, & the philosophy of mindfulness. The DBQ saber academy is an affiliate member of the Elite Saber Training Alliance. Classes meet Monday evenings year-round.   The leisure services session is a repeated beginner program limited to a first-time student only.

Grandmaster Schmitt’s School of Martial Arts system is a mix of traditional and contemporary martial arts that offers not only an effective self-defense program but a means for personal development and discipline that can lead to success in other areas of your life. You will learn to become a peak performer in the martial arts, combative arts, and performing arts.

Ways to Register

  1. Online Registration
    Online Registration is available 24 hours/day for most Recreation Division classes. We have teamed with the Active Network to provide this service using a valid credit card; a convenience fee will be charged.
  2. Mail-in
    You can mail your registration to Leisure Services, 2200 Bunker Hill Rd., Dubuque, IA 52001.
  3. Fax or E-Mail
    To 563.589.4391 or parkrec@cityofdubuque.org, 24 hours/day using Master Card or Visa.
  4. Walk-in Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., at 2200 Bunker Hill Rd.
  5. After Hours Drop-off
    Place your form and payment in a sealed envelope and drop it in the mail slot in the office door

Registration Form

Programs limited to a certain number of participants will be registered on a first-come, first-served basis with Dubuque residents are given preference. You should receive a confirmation receipt within two weeks. 

Payment

Payment must be included with any registration to be accepted.  Fees may be paid by credit card or checks payable to Leisure Services Department.  Credit Card payments may only be made online, in person, or by phone.

Financial Assistance

To assist low-income residents, the Leisure Services Department allows individuals or families to register for some Recreation Division programs/classes for free or at a reduced price. Appropriate identification and current benefit card must be available, or an income form will need to be completed. For more information please contact the Leisure Services Department at 563.589.4263.
