Refuse Collection

The City of Dubuque uses a pay-as-you throw program in which customers pay according to how much refuse they set out. Unlimited curbside recycling is available at no charge.

How much trash can I set out each week?

Your monthly solid waste base fee pays for one weekly 35-gallon bag or can. Green single-use stickers are required on extra 35-gallon cans, bags or smaller items. Weight of standard individual containers and contents must not exceed 40 pounds. Non complying containers and set outs will be tagged by crews and left uncollected.

What is the cost?

Green stickers ($1.50 each) are available on sheets of five at area grocery, discounts, and hardware stores. Call Utility Billing at (563) 589-4144 to subscribe to an additional 35-gallon can for $8 per month or to "upgrade" to an oversize can (36 to 50 gallon), replacing your base containers, for an additional $5 per month. Monthly tipper carts subscription charges; 64 gallon (224 pounds max) at $20.65, 96 gallon (324 pounds max) at $29. For further information or a subscription, call the Public Works Department at (563) 589-4250. These carts have been very popular for use at rental properties. They are often more cost effective and improve the aesthetics and sanitation of the neighborhood. They are lifted and emptied mechanically.

How should I set out my trash?

Trash must be set out to the curb or alley line by 6:00 a.m. on the scheduled collection day. Containers must not be set out more than 24 hours prior to the collection day or left out more than 24 hours after the collection day. Containers at group/common setout point share with neighbors must be marked with address and apartment numbers.
