2023 Celebrate Africa & The Diaspora

Dubuque, Iowa – The Multicultural Family Center (MFC) will host the 8th annual “Celebrate Africa & the Diaspora” cultural event on Saturday, April 15, from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.   Diaspora is the dispersion or spread of a people from their original homeland to other countries.  The event is all-inclusive, free, family-friendly and will take place at the MFC, 1157 Central Avenue in Dubuque, Iowa.

Event committee members have been meeting since October 2022 and include students, faculty and employees from University of Dubuque, Clarke University, Loras College and the MFC.

“The committee is excited for this year’s event featuring local community members as well as two ‘African Culture Ambassadors’ from ‘CultureALL’ out of Des Moines and African food from the Madison area.  All community members are welcome and encouraged to attend,” said Sarah Petersen, MFC Assistant Director.

The African food will be catered from Priscah Norton.  Priscah is originally from Kenya and also owns ‘Coffee4All Bistro Café’ in Stoughton, WI.   Event committee member Dr. Mary Gitau, also originally from Kenya, met Priscah virtually through a national women’s organization called KWITU-Kenyan Women in the USA.  KWITU is a non-governmental organization supporting and providing opportunities for Kenyan women.  For more information on KWITU, visit www.kwitu.org . The University of Dubuque will also cater a dish for the event.

Performances at the event include a fashion show, poetry, Capoeira martial arts, Turnt-Kidz youth dance group, African drumming, and African dancing with students from Divine Word College.  Attendees can also visit cultural and resource booths as well as African educational displays.
