INCIDENT TYPE: Fire response
ADDRESS/LOCATION: 2200 Block of Francis St.
The Dubuque Emergency Communications Center received a 911 call on Friday, May 5th at 11:55 am from a resident on the 2200 Block of Francis St. reporting smoke and fire in the basement. The occupants were alerted by the smoke detector.
The Dubuque Fire Department was dispatched at 11:56 am to the scene of the three-story single-family home. Initial responding vehicles included 3 fire engines (Engine 501, Engine 506, and Engine 503), 2 truck companies (Truck 511, and Truck 512), a medic unit (Medic 551) and a command vehicle (Command 528) for a total of 15 personnel.
The first unit arrived on scene within 3 minutes of dispatch, conducted a size up and confirmed smoke conditions within the structure and verified all occupants had evacuated from the residence. Command 528 arrived on the scene, established command and directed all response personnel. Initial fire attack crews deployed a hose line to the basement of the building and reported smoke conditions and fire inside and around a dryer. Additional companies arrived on the scene and secured a water supply, deployed a backup hose line to the structure, conducted a search of all floors, assisted with the removal of smoke from the building and conducted salvage and overhaul of the building to limit smoke and fire spread. Crews were able to bring the fire under control within 10 minutes of arrival and remained on the scene for approximately 60 minutes completing salvage and overhaul activities and restoring utilities. The house was turned back over to the homeowner and able to be occupied.
The Dubuque Fire Marshal’s Office determined the cause of the fire to be accidental and originated from inside the dryer. The Dubuque Fire Department was assisted on scene by the Dubuque Police Department, Alliant Energy, Black Hills Energy and the City of Dubuque Housing Department. There were no injuries to civilians or responders reported.
