Tree Planting Event at New Lower Bee Branch Trail Segment This Saturday

Oct. 25, 2023

The City of Dubuque is holding a tree planting event at 10 a.m. this Saturday, Oct. 28, to celebrate the completion of Phase 1 of the Lower Bee Branch Creek Trail project. The public is invited to help Dubuque Trees Forever and members of the Dubuque City Council plant trees and enjoy a walk or bike ride along the new trail.

The project began in April and included the construction of a 10-foot-wide paved trail that extends south from the existing Bee Branch trail at Sycamore St. under the U.S. HWY 61/151 overpass along the 16th St. Detention Basin to E. 12th St. near the Alliant Energy Downtown Dubuque Solar Garden.

Offering a unique experience, this new trail connection provides access to the water and recreational opportunities such as fishing and bird watching. The tree planting will be at held along Sycamore St. near E. 14th St. across from Dupaco Community Credit Union. On-street parking is available on E. 14th St.

Phase 2 of the trail will circle the 16th St. Detention Basin along its southern shoreline parallel to 12th St. and along its eastern shoreline parallel to Kerper Blvd. The construction schedule for Phase 2 has not yet been determined.

The Lower Bee Branch Creek Trail project is part of the Dubuque Metropolitan Area Study (DMATS) 2045 Long Range Transportation Plan and supports the transportation and mobility recommendations in the City’s Imagine Dubuque Comprehensive Plan.

Funding for the $732,000 project included $425,000 in federal Transportation Alternatives Program funding from the Iowa Department of Transportation.
