Call for Proposals for 2024 Winter Arts Snow Sculptures and Sculpting Teams Now Open

The City of Dubuque, in partnership with the?Dubuque Museum of Art, announces a call for artists for the?Winter Arts 2024 Snow Sculpting Festival, sanctioned by Winter Fun Inc., to be held February 8-11, 2024, in Washington Park in downtown Dubuque. ? 

Professional, amateur, and collegiate teams from across Iowa and the Greater Dubuque region are invited to apply to participate. Teams of only Iowa residents may elect to compete for the State of Iowa title with the winner receiving an invitation to the 2025 U.S. National Snow Sculpting Competition in Lake Geneva, Wisc.; a cash prize of $1,000 is associated with the 2024 State of Iowa title. All teams are eligible for the People’s Choice award to be determined by the community; a cash prize of $300 is associated with the 2024 People’s Choice award.? 

Entries must be?received by 5 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 15, 2024. Proposals can be submitted online or by downloading a PDF and delivering via email, mail or hand-delivered to the Dubuque Museum of Art. Application details are available below or at? www.cityofdubuque.org/winterarts.? 

2024 Theme

For 2024, teams are encouraged, but not required, to design snow sculptures inspired by LOVE. Educational programming and entertainment scheduled in association with Winter Arts community activities are in conjunction with the Dubuque Symphony Orchestra’s Spring Classic Concert Series: Star-Crossed Lovers, featuring unique retelling of Romeo and Juliet and West Side Story’s love story of Maria and Tony.  The general public is encouraged to save the following dates for additional Winter Arts activities in Washington Park: 

  • Tuesday, Feb. 6, 8 a.m.-12 p.m. or 12:30-4:30 p.m. -Volunteers build snow blocks. 
  • Thursday, Feb. 8, 8 a.m. through Sunday, Feb. 11, 12 p.m. - View snow sculpting in-progress. 
  • Sunday, Feb. 11, 12-4 p.m. - Winter Arts community activities and People’s Choice voting.
