09/11/2024 -- For Immediate Release

DUBUQUE, Iowa –  On Tuesday night, the Dubuque Police Department was made aware of a Snap Chat message containing a veiled school threat which was not specific to any Dubuque Community School District school.  The Snapchat message that was posted referenced “shooting up hms.”  This message was shared by numerous people in the community which resulted in calls from concerned parents and citizens to the Dubuque Police Department and Dubuque Community School District.  An investigation began last night as to the origin of the post and at this time there is no indication that this is a credible threat to any Dubuque schools.  There is also no indication the post originated in Dubuque or is in reference to any Dubuque school.  The preliminary investigation has shown this post to have originated from the eastern side of the country.  Out of an abundance of caution, there was an increased police presence at several Dubuque schools this morning.

The Dubuque Police Department is grateful for the numerous reports received by community members which allowed us to launch an investigation early into this event.  We would like to take this opportunity to encourage parents to have conversations with their children about appropriate actions to take when they become aware of threats to our schools, and remind students that police or school district staff should be notified immediately.
