The first unit, Battalion 1, arrived on scene within 4 minutes 36 seconds of dispatch reporting smoke on floor 1. Occupants were not present outside of the structure, initially. The fire crew entered the first floor to search for residents and fire. Interior crews indicated light smoke from floor to ceiling, no fire, and no occupants. A fire hose was charged with water. A second fire crew turned off the gas and went to the basement to check for fire and occupants. The second fire crew found fire in the basement and directed the initial hose line into the basement. Fire was extinguished within a couple minutes of discovery. Crews also reported heavy smoke conditions inside the basement. All occupants were accounted for and had evacuated prior to Fire Department's arrival. A fan was used to remove the smoke. Crews began work to overhaul the basement and the first floor directly above the fire. Minimal fire extension was observed and quickly extinguished. Crews continued to fight hot spots and clear smoke from the basement. The fire remains under investigation. The home was determined to be uninhabitable and the American Red Cross was contacted to provide aide to the occupants. Losses were estimated at $20,000.
The Dubuque Fire Department was assisted on scene by the Dubuque Police Department. There were no injuries to responders and occupants reported.
