City of Dubuque Parks & Recreation Invites the Community to “Kite Tales” Event on May 17

The City of Dubuque Parks and Recreation Department invites families and community members to Kite Tales, a free outdoor event in celebration of Kids to Parks Day on Saturday, May 17, from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. at Usha Park, 3937 Pennsylvania Ave.

Kids to Parks Day is a national initiative encouraging families to explore the outdoors and connect with public lands. Dubuque’s Kite Tales event brings this mission to life through engaging, hands-on activities designed to inspire creativity, exploration, and appreciation of nature.

Event highlights include:

• Create Your Own Kite! – Let your creativity soar at the kite decorating station. All materials provided (while supplies last).

• Live Kite Flying Demonstrations – Learn how to fly a kite from skilled flyers. Bring your own kite or fly a kite you made at the kite decorating station! 

• Giant Show Kites in the Sky – Enjoy the spectacle as experienced kite enthusiasts launch massive, colorful kites—weather and wind permitting!

Special guests include:

• Iowa DNR Conservation Officer Nate Johnson – Get an up-close look at a real water patrol boat and learn about protecting our waterways.

• City Horticulturist Kelly Goossen – Discover expert tips on planting and gardening from the City's green thumb.

• Kaytlan Moeller, Outreach Coordinator for Dubuque County Conservation – Explore local conservation efforts and ways you can get involved in protecting natural spaces.

This is a free community event. In the event the parking lot at Usha Park is full, overflow parking will be available next door at The Journey Assembly of God Church.

At the event, community members are also invited to provide input on parks and recreation in Dubuque. The input received will inform the City’s Parks and Recreation Master Plan. Those unable to attend are invited to provide input online at YourStoryDubuque.com.
