Winter Collection Tips

Public Works staff have a tough time reaching  trash, recycling, and/or food scrap containers during heavy winter condition. By making your container or bag visible and easier to reach, our workers can collect your container (s) safely and efficient.

What to do with your trash when it snows?

  • The City encourages the use of dark-colored garbage bags, not white ones, so collection crews can see your trash has been set out.
  • For best visibility and access to collection crews, place containers, bags, bins, and bundles:
    • at the corner of your driveway,
    • in a shoveled-out street-side windrow notch, but
    • not on the sidewalk or behind a snow pile or windrow.
  • Use high-quality solid waste containers that are resistant to cracking in cold weather.
  • Use lids to keep snow and ice out of solid waste containers.
  • When recycling cardboard (no larger than 40” by 48”), please flatten and bundle, or stuff into a medium-size cardboard box; or, place flat under your recycling bin.
  • Please remove empty containers from curbside or alley as soon as possible to aid walkers and snow plow crews.

Never Miss Your Waste Again!
