DUBUQUE, Iowa – The City of Dubuque Historic Preservation Commission invites residents to celebrate Historic Preservation Month with several activities in May. 

National Historic Preservation Month is a time when people across America come together to celebrate their heritage, culture, and historic places. Sponsored annually by the National Trust for Historic Preservation since 1973, it is designed to raise awareness about the power historic preservation has in protecting and enhancing our historic communities.

Admission will be free to the first 200 visitors to Eagle Point Park (2601 Shiras Ave.) on Saturday, May 5. Eagle Point Park is now one of 18 National Register Districts located in the city of Dubuque, which has an additional 47 properties individually listed in the register. Additional information, historic images, and an opportunity to view the nomination can be found at www.cityofdubuque.org/epp. Listing in the National Register contributes to preserving historic properties in several ways. Listing bestows benefits such as recognition that a property is of significance to the nation, the state, or the community. It helps facilitate the planning and implementation of federal or federally assisted projects. Listing also extends eligibility for federal and state tax benefits and grants. The Old House Enthusiasts are conducting their 31st tour on Saturday, May 19, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the historic Washington Neighborhood. Tour begins at the beautiful Steeple Square Campus at 1584 White St. The tour includes renovated historic homes at 1465, 1530, 1667 and 1710 Jackson St. and 246 East 14th St. This tour is a wonderful celebration of Dubuque’s history, neighborhoods, architecture and people. Tickets are not required; a free-will donation is requested.
