July 23, 2012 - For Immediate Release
Water and Wastewater Workers of Iowa Week, July 22-July 28
DUBUQUE, Iowa – When you take a drink of tap water, take a shower, or flush a toilet this week, consider the infrastructure and human resources it takes to provide water and wastewater services to your home or business. Iowa Governor Terry Branstad has declared July 22-28, 2012 as Water and Wastewater Workers of Iowa Week to honor the many people who work in these industries and protect public health and the environment.
The Governor’s proclamation states that “…the State of Iowa’s surface and ground waters are a treasured natural resource and the water and wastewater workforce of Iowa have dedicated themselves to applying environmental science to enhance drinking and recreational waters of Iowa. Their applied environmental science-based practices continue to be a vital element in improving the quality of life and preserving and protecting public health in our state, and promoting sustainability in our way of living.”
The City of Dubuque Water Department is dedicated to producing and delivering drinking water that is in compliance with all state and federal drinking water standards. The Eagle Point Water Plant is staffed 24 hours per day, seven days per week and over 200 tests per day are performed by water treatment plant operators to ensure the safety of Dubuque’s drinking water. Every day, 7.2 million gallons of water are pumped through the Eagle Point Water Plant, with an average of 2.8 billion gallons of water pumped annually.
Dubuque’s Water and Resource Recover Center (W&RRC) is the city’s wastewater treatment facility and is currently undergoing a $64 million upgrade to replace aging plant components and reduce plant operating costs. The W&RRC is staffed 24 hours per day, seven days per week to oversee the operation and maintenance of the plant, the sanitary sewer pumping stations throughout the city, and the laboratory operations. The W&RRC treated an average of 6.8 million gallons per day in June of this year, with an average of 3 billion gallons treated each year.
