Pavelic Named Dubuque's Community Engagement Coordinator
DUBUQUE, Iowa – The City of Dubuque Human Rights Department is pleased to introduce Nikola Pavelic as its new community engagement coordinator, a new position developed to support residents already participating in community and government, while catalyzing additional participation. Pavelic started in the position on Monday, July 23.
Pavelic comes to Dubuque from Des Moines where he completed his master’s degree in adult learning and organizational leadership at Drake University. His past experience includes working in the non-profit sector and has involved a variety of efforts related to volunteer and community engagement. Most recently, Pavelic worked as a director at CULTUREALL™, an Iowa-based non-profit organization that teaches youth the importance of intercultural understanding and appreciation. He brings critical and strategic thinking skills, and the ability to work collaboratively and assist people in navigating change.
As community engagement coordinator for the City of Dubuque, Pavelic’s duties will include providing strategies, planning, facilitation, and development services to City management and departments, and creating and implementing a long-term community engagement plan that includes consistent and effective communication, engagement, and participation in local government and community building processes and supporting an inclusive community.
Pavelic, a native of Bosnia, transitioned to a new life in Iowa in his youth and knows firsthand the challenges that accompany change. “While living in Iowa, I’ve realized we each bring our own experiences, stories and hopes to where we live, and each of us has to decide individually how we will contribute to a shared vision,” he said. “I am excited to join a community like Dubuque that thrives socially and economically because it respects its past, enjoys the present, and challenges what is possible.”
