Open Burning Ban to be Lifted
Burn Notification Ordinance remains in Effect
DUBUQUE, Iowa -- Effective at 6:00 a.m. on Friday, August 17, 2012, the State Fire Marshal has lifted the ban on open burning at the request of the Dubuque County Fire Chiefs. This means that legal burning of trash, farmland, pastures and other rural areas can resume. It is always illegal to burn such items as tires, shingles, construction trade waste and other materials hazardous to the atmosphere.
A Dubuque County Ordinance is always in effect that states that no person, firm, or corporation shall kindle any building or other structure, farm land, pasture including CRP acres or other rural ground or woodland without first notifying the Dubuque County Emergency E911 Communications Center on the non emergency number of 563-583-1711. Exceptions to the burn notification are the use of outdoor fireplaces, barbeque grills, or the burning of trash in incinerators or trash burners made of metal, concrete, or masonry, with no openings greater than one square inch.
Failure to properly notify authorities will result in a fine of up to $500 and/or 30 days in jail.
The fire chiefs will be monitoring conditions as we are still considered to be in a severe drought. If it is determined that calls for service increase due to uncontrolled fires in the county, the ban will be immediately reinstated.
For further information, please contact the Emergency Management Agency or your local fire department.
