Dubuque Fire Department Acquires Smoke Alarms for the Hard of Hearing
DUBUQUE, Iowa – The City of Dubuque Fire Department was awarded a federal Assistance to Firefighters Grant to purchase 50 smoke alarms for the hard of hearing. The special alarms are designed to grant peace of mind to the hard of hearing while they sleep. The alarm’s base unit is positioned on a dresser or nightstand and plugs into an outlet. If the alarm detects smoke, it sends a radio signal to the base unit and makes a light flash, and a cord runs under a pillow with a vibrating pad to wake the person. The alarm has a built-in battery backup in case of a power failure. Dubuque firefighters will be installing the alarms in homes or apartments within Dubuque city limits. If interested in having an alarm installed, e-mail fire@cityofdubuque.org or call 563-589-4160 and leave your name, address, e-mail address, and/or phone number to set up an install time.
