Eleven new sculptures have been selected for the City of Dubuque’s 17th edition of its annual temporary public art exhibit, Art on the River. The theme for the 2023-24 exhibit is “Innovate & Illuminate.” As “the Key City,” Dubuque has historically served as a beacon of progress, showed forward momentum, and signified a bright tomorrow. Historically and today, the Dubuque community strives to light the way to a future that is sustainable and resilient. Our community of the future is one that is inclusive, equitable, connected, active, and vibrant.
Sculptures span the length of the Mississippi Riverwalk in the Port of Dubuque. The new exhibit will be displayed through late July 2024. All the sculptures are available for purchase with a portion of artwork sales retained to sustain the Art on the River program; Art on the River is currently funded through the City of Dubuque’s general operating budget.
A community jury panel selected the sculptures from a pool of 32 applications from 22 artists representing 10 states in the U.S. as well as Canada. The panel chose 11 sculptures along with two alternates and provided placement recommendations to the City of Dubuque’s Arts & Cultural Affairs Advisory Commission, which concurred with the panel’s selections, followed by review and approval by the Dubuque City Council.
