The Dubuque Police Department is accepting applications from residents who wish to participate in the annual Citizen’s Police Academy. The purpose of this program is to build a better understanding between citizens and the police through education.
The Dubuque Police Department will be taking applications from residents of Dubuque who wish to participate in the 16th annual session of the Citizen’s Police Academy (CPA). The purpose of this program is to build a better understanding between citizens and the police through education. The CPA is not designed to make the participants certified police officers. All classes are taught by law enforcement professionals and other members of the Criminal Justice System. Classroom time includes presentations regarding arrest procedures, search & seizure, use of force, laws & policies, police procedures, domestic abuse cases, sexual abuse cases, drug enforcement, OWI’s, officer safety, and prevention programs.
The Police Department will begin accepting applications immediately, with an application deadline of January 20, 2012. Applications can be picked up at the Police Department, or available at www.cityofdubuque.org/CPA.
The requirements for participation are:
*Resident of the City of Dubuque
*At least 18 years of age
*No felony convictions
*No significant arrest history
The classes are scheduled as follows:
*eleven sessions beginning February 7, 2012, running through April 17, 2012
*sessions begin at 6:00 p.m. and conclude at 9:00 p.m.
*sessions will be held on Tuesday evenings
Two additional activities will include:
*a ride-along with a Patrol Officer (mandatory)
*a firearms session to be held on a Saturday morning (optional)
Class size is limited. Those selected should be prepared to make a commitment to attend all eleven sessions.
