[ARCHIVED] Stabbing Suspect in Custody

On August 24th, 2012 at 3:58 a.m., Dubuque Police were called to Mercy Hospital to meet with a stabbing victim, identified as Stephen W. Toliver, 26, of 601 Garfield Avenue #201, Dubuque.

On August 24th, 2012 at 3:58 a.m., Dubuque Police were called to Mercy Hospital to meet with a stabbing victim, identified as Stephen W. Toliver, 26, of 601 Garfield Avenue #201, Dubuque. The investigation revealed Toliver and Maria C. Cavin, 25, of 1392 Main St. #4, were involved in a physical altercation that developed to the rear of her residence. During the altercation, Cavin allegedly stabbed Toliver multiple times causing injuries that were not life-threatening. Toliver was transported to Mercy Hospital by private vehicle, where he was treated and released.

Investigators obtained a warrant for Cavin’s arrest, charging Willful Injury, with a bond of $500,000. On Saturday, August 25th, 2012, Cavin turned herself in at the Dubuque Law Enforcement Center. She remains in the custody of the Dubuque County Sheriff’s Office. Willful Injury is a Class D Felony punishable by a fine of $750 to $7,500 and imprisonment not to exceed five years.

As with any criminal case, the charges filed are allegations and any suspects charged are presumed innocent until convicted in a court of law.
