[ARCHIVED] Prominently Displayed Address Numbers Enhance Safety & Response

The Dubuque Fire and Police Departments would like to remind citizens that prominently displayed address numbers enhance safety by facilitating a more efficient response by emergency personnel.

The Dubuque Fire and Police Departments would like to remind citizens that prominently displayed address numbers enhance safety by facilitating a more efficient response by emergency personnel. Section 505.1 (Premises/Address Identification) of the Fire Code requires address numbers to be Arabic and/or letters to be alphabetical, a minimum of 4 inches (101.6 mm) in height, and with a minimum stroke width of 0.5 inch (12.7 mm). The address designation must be positioned so that it is plainly legible and visible from the street or road fronting the property, and the numbers/letters shall contrast with their background. Where access is by means of a private road and the building cannot be viewed from the public way, a monument, pole or other sign or means shall be used to identify the structure.

With regard to address numbers being painted on city curbs, this practice is strongly discouraged as the numbers are often obstructed by snow, vehicles and/or other debris, and if not properly maintained become difficult to see (especially in low/no light situations). Additionally, individuals soliciting door-to-door offering to paint address numbers on curbs, are required to have a Peddler’s Permit and Right-of-Way Permit issued by the City Clerk’s Office. Individuals providing this type of service are required to have said permits on their person and provide them upon request.

During an emergency when seconds count, responders need to locate house numbers quickly. The Dubuque Fire and Police Departments appreciate everyone’s assistance in enhancing emergency responder efficiency and community safety.
