CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – U.S. Marshals today arrested in Dubuque the suspect in a stabbing that sent a Marion man to the hospital last week. Sean Hemphill, 42, is a suspect in a stabbing that took place in Marion Wednesday.
Hemphill is additionally wanted on charges for failure to register as a sex offender.
Due to the nature of the crime, the U.S. Marshals Service Northern Iowa Fugitive Task force began working the fugitive investigation immediately. The Marshals tracked Hemphill throughout eastern Iowa until early this morning, when they believed they had identified a location in a residential area of Dubuque. After hours of surveillance Dubuque Police Deparment along with the US Marshals identified Hemphill in the 700 block Main street in Dubuque. Hemphill was quickly taken into custody without incident. He will be transported to the Linn County Jail where he faces the pre-existing sex offense charges, and new charges from Wednesday’s stabbing.
The U.S. Marshals Service is the federal government’s primary agency for fugitive investigations. Nationwide, 60 local task forces are dedicated to violent crime reduction by locating and apprehending wanted criminals. These task forces also serve as the central point for agencies to share information on fugitive matters. The Northern Iowa Fugitive Task Force is composed of officers from the U.S. Marshals Service, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the Linn County Sheriff’s Office, Cedar Rapids Police Department, and the Iowa Department of Criminal Investigation.
