A multistate outbreak of infant botulism has been linked to ByHeart Whole Nutrition powdered infant formula; 15 infants across 12 states have been hospitalized and treated with immunoglobulin called BabyBIG®. No cases have been identified in Iowa.
Iowans should stop using any ByHeart Whole Nutrition formula, including single serve packets. A national recall has been initiated for the formula, but it’s possible the formula is still being consumed. The WIC formula supply is not affected.
Iowa clinicians should familiarize themselves with signs of infant botulism: initial signs often include constipation, difficulty feeding (difficulty sucking or swallowing), loss of head control, weak facial expression, and reduced muscle tone progressing to descending paralysis potentially leading to life-threatening respiratory failure. If infant botulism is suspected, treatment with BabyBIG® should not be delayed (do not wait for laboratory confirmation).
Iowa clinicians who suspect infant botulism should immediately call CADE at 800-362-2736 (business hours) or 515-323-4360 (after hours, ask for the on-call epidemiologist). CADE will coordinate with the Infant Botulism Treatment & Prevention Program for evaluation and to obtain BabyBIG® treatment.
