[ARCHIVED] Dubuque Police Warn Citizens & Merchants of Counterfeit Currency

The Dubuque Police Department has recently become aware of counterfeit $100 bills circulating through the community and being passed at local merchants and during private transactions.

Merchants and citizens are asked to be wary for counterfeit currency and can obtain additional information on detecting counterfeit currency, including a “Know Your Money” poster, by visiting the United States Secret Service website:

http://www.secretservice.gov/know_your_money.shtml

When checking currency, be sure to look for at least two verification features (ex.: the embedded denomination strip & Presidential hologram).

Merchants or citizens who believe they have a person attempting to pass a counterfeit bill should attempt to notify police during the event, or as soon as possible following the acceptance or rejection of the counterfeit currency.
