[ARCHIVED] Charge Upgraded to Attempted Murder

On October 4th, 2016, at 2:40 p.m., Dubuque Police responded to the 500 block of West 8th Street on the report of shots fired.

Witnesses directed officers to the wooded area on the south side of 8th Street, indicating one of the individuals involved was last seen running there. Officers located Steven K. Burrell, 21, of Chicago, hiding in the woods. Officers also located 2 handguns, shell casings, and damage to a parked vehicle, all in the immediate vicinity. No other property damage was located and no injuries were reported to police.

Burrell was arrested and initially charged with Reckless Use of a Firearm. He also had an out-of-state warrant for his arrest. After additional investigation and consultation with the Dubuque County Attorney, Burrell’s charge was upgraded to Attempted Murder. Attempted Murder is a Class B Felony punishable by up to 25 years in prison. Burrell is being held without bond in the Dubuque County Jail. The investigation is ongoing and additional charges are probable.

As with any criminal case, the charges filed are allegations and any suspects are presumed innocent until convicted in a court of law.
