[ARCHIVED] Two Confirmed Reports of Shots Fired Over the Weekend - Officers Possibly Targeted

On October 30th, 2016, at approximately 4:00 a.m., Dubuque Police responded to the 500 block of Almond Street on the report of shots fired. As officers arrived, several people were observed leaving the area on foot and in vehicles.

The investigation revealed two females were at a party at 574 Almond Street and engaged in a physical altercation outside the residence. During the altercation, a male subject allegedly fired several shots in the air while standing in the street. No injuries, property damage, or other physical evidence was located but credible witness accounts support the above version of events. One of the females involved in the fight, Brittany R. Walters, 23, of 9442 Noonan Street #423, rural Dubuque, was located at the scene and arrested for Public Intoxication, Disorderly Conduct, and Interference with Official Acts after she refused to comply with the lawful orders of the investigating officers. The investigation remains ongoing and additional charges are likely.

At the same time, three officers were near 13th and Jackson Streets having just cleared a call for service in that area. The officers, one in a police vehicle and the other two on foot, heard the shots fired on Almond Street, and immediately thereafter heard a single gunshot very close in proximity to them. Based on the ongoing investigation, it is believed the officers were the intended target of the single gunshot. No physical injuries reported or property damage located.

As with any criminal case, the charges filed are allegations and any suspects are presumed innocent until convicted in a court of law.
