November 2, 2012 - For Immediate Release

Award-Winning Day in Ames for Dubuque's Complete Streets Project

DUBUQUE, Iowa – The City of Dubuque’s Millwork District Complete Streets Project received two awards at two separate award conferences held in Ames on Nov. 1; one for excellence in planning and the other for excellence in concrete.

The Complete Streets Project received an Iowa Award for Implementation by the American Planning Association (APA) at the annual APA-Iowa conference. The other award, a 2012 Excellence in Concrete award for sustainable practices, was received at the Iowa Better Concrete Conference.

Each year, members of the American Planning Association Iowa Chapter nominate plans, projects, and individuals deserving recognition by the professional organization.  Award nominees can be recognized in thirteen categories ranging from planning excellence to distinguished leadership. The Excellence in Concrete awards recognize outstanding projects from throughout the state that are judged by criteria such as architectural design, project complexity and individuality, engineering challenges, difficulty of construction, workmanship, and use of ready-mixed concrete.

In addition to these two awards, the Complete Streets Project received recognition this year from the Iowa Chapter of the American Public Works Association (APWA) as “Project of the Year in Transportation--Greater than $5 Million, Less than $25 Million” and was also named a “Top 10 Road” of 2012 by Roads & Bridges magazine. The Dubuque Main Street organization also recognized the Complete Streets Project (Tiger Grant Project) as the “Best Public Improvement Project” at its annual awards banquet.

The $7.7 million Complete Streets Project was completed in May 2012 and was funded in part through a $5.6 million U.S. Department of Transportation TIGER (Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery) Grant.  A $150,000 Iowa Great Places grant from the Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs helped fund the streetscape portion of the project. The project involved the design of streets to facilitate safe access for a broad range of users, including drivers, public transportation vehicles and riders, pedestrians, bicyclists, older people, children, and people with disabilities.
