Sixth Annual "Put a LID on It" Workshop Scheduled for Feb. 20-21
DUBUQUE, Iowa –The public is invited to attend a two-day workshop entitled “Put a LID on It: Protecting Our Water Resources Today and Into the Future,” at the National Mississippi River Museum and Aquarium in Dubuque on Wed., Feb. 20, and Thurs., Feb. 21.
The workshop will focus on low-impact development (LID), an innovative stormwater management approach that emphasizes conservation and use of on-site natural features to protect water quality. The goal of LID is to mimic a site’s predevelopment hydrology by using design techniques that infiltrate, filter, store, evaporate, and detain runoff water close to its source.
Day one of the workshop, Feb. 20, is free to the public and begins at 6 p.m. with a performance by the Senior High Jazz Band followed by a presentation by the Iowa Flood Center regarding changes in climate, precipitation patterns, and what it means to Iowans. Day two of the workshop, Feb. 21, goes from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and features keynote speaker Jeffrey L. Bruce, owner of a national landscape architectural firm known for its award-winning projects and support to other firms on a variety of project profiles such as engineered soils and green roof technologies.
Registration is required and day two of the workshop has a standard registration of $20 or a student registration of $10, which includes lunch. Registration forms are available at www.dubuqueswcd.org and must be returned with payment to the Dubuque Soil and Water Conservation District at 210 Bierman Rd., Epworth, IA 52045. For additional information, contact Eric Schmechel at 563-876-3418, ext. 3 or e-mail eschmechel@dubuqueswcd.org.
The workshop is sponsored by: the City of Dubuque, Dubuque County, the Catfish Creek Watershed, the City of Asbury, the National Mississippi River Museum & Aquarium, and Great Rivers Chapter of the International Erosion Control Association (IECA).
