Catfish Creek Sanitary Sewer Improvements

The City of Dubuque is upgrading the Catfish Creek Sanitary Sewer system and lift station to improve performance, reduce the risk of sewer overflows, and support future development. These improvements will ensure our wastewater infrastructure continues to serve residents reliably for decades to come.

This project has been carefully planned over many years to meet the needs of our growing community. The timeline of key milestones highlights major steps in the planning, design, and construction process.

Old Mill Rd. Lift Station and Force Main Project

November 2024 - December 2026

The Old Mill Road Lift Station and Force Main Project is the first in a series of planned improvements to the Catfish Creek Interceptor Sewer system. These upgrades are necessary to ensure the system can handle current wastewater flows and support future development as the City continues to grow.

Once completed, the new 20 million gallons per day (MGD) lift station will take on more than 80% of the flow that currently goes to the existing 8 MGD Catfish Creek Lift Station. This shift will allow the Catfish Creek Lift Station to primarily serve the Key West area and future growth along U.S. Highway 151/61, including areas near the airport that are connected to the Granger Creek Interceptor Sewer.

Since 2017, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) has issued sanitary sewer permits for developments south of the city with peak flows totaling approximately 3.5 MGD. By redirecting flow from the west side of town, the Catfish Creek Lift Station will have the capacity it needs to continue serving the southern sewershed effectively in the years ahead.
