Water Distribution Services

Water Distribution Services is responsible for the machinery, equipment, materials, and personnel required to repair main breaks; installing water mains, control valves, and fire hydrants; maintaining the grounds of the division; and assisting other divisions of the Water Department. Dubuque’s distribution system is comprised of

• 330 miles of water mains
• 8,008 control valves, and 
• 2,606 fire hydrants

Additional Services

Bulk Water

Bulk water is sold at 925 Kerper Court. Prior to receiving water you must first come down and pick up a card to activate the bulk water. Please call at least one day in advance to get your water card made and activated at no charge you are only charged for the product when used. Please leave time for training on the water system when the card is picked up. The bulk water will only work with the card issued so if you have multiple trucks running you may need more than one card. Prior to getting a card we will need a billing address with a contact person and phone number.

For hose hook-ups we have a 4” overhead hose for top filling which is permanently mounted. Also we have a 2 1/2” male cam lock fitting to which you will have to supply your own hose and connection.

Hydrant Meter Set Up

There are two (2) sizes of hydrant meters a 2” with 2 ½” NST Fire - male fitting. The other is a 1” with a standard garden hose hook up. Any hoses or other fittings are to be supplied by the person requesting the device.

Once the hydrant is set and tuned on only a person authorized by the City of Dubuque may turn on or off the Hydrant. The meter has a valve for the customer to operate. The meter is chained and locked to the Fire Hydrant. The meter has the capability for the customer to lock the valve closed. The customer will have to supply their own hoses and additional connections if needed.

The customer is then responsible for any damage to the meter or freezing that may occur during the cold months. Call our office at least a day in advance with your request. We will need the billing address as well as the start and end date that the service will be needed. 

Water Service for Festivals and Events

The City of Dubuque Water Department can supply a water service for festivals and events within the city. The customer will have to supply their own hoses if needed. Call our office at least one day in advance with your request. We will need the billing address as well as the start and end date that the service will be needed.
