Emergency Medical Dispatching

Emergency Medical Dispatching Process
Communications Operators in the Dubuque County Communications Center are trained and certified in Emergency Medical Dispatching. When you call 9-1-1 with a medical emergency, the operator will ask questions and is qualified to give you medical instructions over the phone to assist you before the emergency responders arrive at your location.

When calling the Dubuque County Communications Center with a medical emergency, remember: stay calm and stay on the line. As the operator is asking you questions, another dispatcher is sending help to your location. The information you can provide to the operator is relayed to the units responding to the scene to better prepare them for your emergency situation. Operators can give instructions such as administering CPR or helping a choking victim, emergencies that require immediate attention to save lives.
